Responsibilities

This position will support the Design Engineering Department in North Las Vegas, with periodic site visits required for project support. The Design Engineering Department provides designs for the Infrastructure Directorate which includes NNSS facilities, site planning, reconfiguration of facilities, and supporting corrective action dispositions. The Principal Architect will be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in their field and provide support to Design Engineering.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work on multiple projects, maintain high level of detail, work well with technical staff, and adapt to project demands.
  • Generate, oversee and/or coordinate plans and overall designs for facilities and area planning.
  • Ensure that specifications and proposed designs meet applicable federal, state and International Building Code requirements.
  • Ensure team processes and deliverables comply with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
  • Serve as SME for the following:
    • Respond to questions and issues related to facility code compliance.

    • Resolve conflicting customer expectations and design requirements, utilize unconventional technology and materials, and cross-discipline integration.

    • Interpret and adapt guidelines for specific cases.

  • Assist in developing design/construction concepts with the Project Manager, Project Engineer, Facility Management, Construction and support organizations. 
  • Meet with customers and facility personnel to determine and document objectives and functional requirements for new and modified facilities. Define customer needs and develop technical proposals.
  • Participate in planning phases of projects to determine customer requirements during initial planning discussions.  
  • Work with Cost Estimating in the definition of construction practices and procedures. 
  • Assist Cost Estimating with the incorporation of construction activities into the cost estimate, work breakdown structure and organizational breakdown structure. 
  • Prepare and review procurement and construction specifications, including requests for proposals for new and modified facilities.
  • Prepare work statements for complex subcontracts and procurements, evaluate bids, and make recommendation for awards.
  • Follow and manage project budget, work plans, costs, consultants and schedule.
  • Develop design ideas, diagrams, digital models, presentation materials, and production work for a multitude of project types.
  • Coordinate technical drawings, specifications and other contract deliverables with consultants and subcontractors.
  • Develop solutions to technical problems including identifying proper SMEs.
  • Review submittal, requests for information and other project documentation.
  • Coordinate team efforts to complete a project promptly and successfully.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in an Architecture program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
    • Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering;
    • Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB)
    • Or Professional Engineer license
  • Plus at least 14 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Advanced degree from an NAAB Institution preferred.
  • National Council of Architectural Registration Boards certification preferred.
  • Professional Architecture Registration/License in a U.S. Jurisdiction, with the ability to be licensed in the State of Nevada within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to complete workload with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to use Autodesk AutoCAD/Revit.
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards applicable to the position.
  • The primary work location will be at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Work at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada) may be required in support of these functions.
  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

 

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Annual salary range for this position is: $141,232.00 - $218,920.00.

 

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
